Celtic Recons, Youth and Elders

Saturday, January 12, 2008

I’ve had the occasion to visit the MySpace group, “Druid Fellowship for Today’s Druids” recently, just to see how bad things are over there. I even ended up posting there, though I see it has done no good. But I think I know what the problem is…..

YOUTH.

The majority of posters there are young, and the younger they are the more venomous. And fundamentalist. You know, in and of itself, Celtic Reconstructionism is not a bad thing, nor is learning a Celtic language. As long as we recognize that there are limits, that there are things we are just
never going to know for sure (about the ancient Druids) then if study is what you want to do, by all means study your heart out, and share what you learn with the rest of us.

CR was, after all, invented by Reformed Druids, and is therefore as much a Reformed Druid tradition as anything else. It’s sad that on MySpace we can’t share with our CR brothers and sisters, but we can do so elsewhere. And there is much to be learned in the sharing on both sides.

It is ironic though, that in all their studies the one thing these young CRs seem to have missed is that the ancient Celts honored, respected, and revered their elders.
